As far as the 3D thing goes, I don't think it is necessary to have the Hobbit filmed in 3D, I really don't care for 3D movies much and it seems that all movies are in 3D now and I think it takes away from story telling just to add some dumb 3D effect,I'm disappointed in the decision to do it like that, I'm just sayin'

I'm not exactly understanding the 3D craze myself, but from what I've seen, all 3D films released (even Avatar) had a 2D counterpart. I'm sure the Hobbit will be the same, so I don't think it's anything to get all fired up for.

They're confirmed? I thought it was still just rumour... O_o Anyway, that only makes sense, I think they know full well that hardly anyone would want to see someone else as Gandalf and Gollum.
I'm dubious as to how they would get Ian Holm and Christopher Lee to NZ, though... This one sounds more like from the realm of I-wish to me -_-

Yep, they're confirmed! Yeessssss. Now just give us Hugo Weaving, please. I know I'm being dramatic, but I will simply DIE if he is not in the film.

I am not 100 percent sure, but I think Orlando Bloom is going to be Legolas in The Hobbit (!!). TORN says this is possible because Legolas was indeed alive at the time of The Hobbit. I am fine with this if his role is a small one. But otherwise, I don't like it. I really like Orlando Bloom (*fan girl scream*) and all but if they make Legolas a huge character, I will not be happy.

Hi i for one can not wait until the Hobbit movie is filmed. And not just seeing the Hobbit story itself, but also getting to see the white council attack Dol Guldur. Although Sauron flees i would like to see him actually beat the council (sorry guys) and going to Mordor and overseeing his army with the Mouth of Sauron and even the Witchking by his side. Also maybe including a scene where we actually see Saruman allying himself to Sauron just like the one in the two towers where the wildman cuts his hand infront of Saruman pledging his allegance

Lord_Sauron, I actually wouldn't put this beyond PJ's team. If movie Witchking can defeat Gandalf in RotK, then Sauron sticking out his tongue at the White Council and floating/riding off to Mordor isn't all that unimaginable... Although I personally wouldn't be one bit delighted at that.
The one with Saruman is not very likely, though... he's not yet cast anyway, is he?

I was also very curious about Christopher Lee and his involvement. I know he's pushing 90, and said something about not wanting to fly to New Zealand at his age, but if he does indeed return I will be happy

I would love to see Christopher Lee in the movie as not-yet-quite-corrupted Saruman, but I would not like him to risk his health to travel there if he has not been feeling well lately. I wonder if they could film his parts in the UK, seeing as Dol Guldur would likely be digital/mini/bluescreen anyway

That's what I thought exactly, noleme ... nowadays it seems to be a common thing to use bluescreen in such a way, so it won't be such a difficult thing.

Besides, we've already seen how it works when two actors film their parts seperately and are added later as if they are together in the scene ... Gandalf handing Bilbo his staff and hat anyone? (FOTR) I guess that clearly speaks for itself as to how seemless and good the interaction on screen is. And that was 9 years ago, let alone today.

I think it's safe to say, knowing Christopher Lee is a huge Tolkien fan, that he won't miss this part for anything.

And humor permitting, this is a movie to die for

I wonder, if PJ is continuing his tradition of prologues, what it would be about this time... I think it's going to be about the 'wizard in Dol Guldur' and/or Smaug. And if he is going to include a scene where Gandalf meets Thorin in the prancing pony which I read about somewhere in the appendices.

I'm so excited about this all ^.^

I think I remember PJ saying that he never wanted to have a prologue in the movie. It was New Line that insisted they make one . He then went for that whole James Bond like opening and did great.

But I think you have a great idea there, to start the movie with Gandalf and Thorin. Maybe have David Weatherley play Barliman Butterbur again.

I'd certainly favor that start more than something with Elijah (unless they get Ian Holm to play older Bilbo with him).

Interesting idea Bejoes... I hope they pick something like the FotR prologue, the RotK one was a huge letdown for me... disgusting worm and a disgusting murder, I hope they won't start The Hobbitwith anything of the kind :/ I agree Bejoes, Gandalf meeting Thorin would be very cool.. for me

Likewise, Bejoes, I'd like a prologue too. It would be interesting if it were about Smaug first coming down the Lonely Mountain and driving Thrain and Thror out of it.

^ yeah! that way, PJ wouldn't have to do a big flashback in the middle of the film. not that such an idea is silly, we saw what he did in fotr with the scene of Gandalf being stuck at the top of Orthanc.

In case someone missed it, here's a huge Guillermo Del Toro interview.

A long read but with some interesting stuff in it that makes me only more glad that he got out of this project. For some reason stuff like "digital sky replacement to create painterly effect" doesn't sound encouraging. Nor does the statement he was never a big LotR fan. And Thorin's helm having thorns cause he was named Thorin... :twitch:

The only idea that I found interesting there was the way he color-coded the film.

Lol Aegor! Yeah the Thorin-thorn association was abit ... weird shall we say. And although I wouldn't have liked all that he would have done with the film, I still think he's a very good director with a one-of-a-kind vision ... but the best thing is that PJ is there now!

I'm a little bit disappointed actually as I'd thought they'd be filming this month. They seem to be constantly moving the dates of filming forward and forward. At this rate, the first film will be release in 2013!

But I guess better late than never ... fingers crossed for that day then and let's hope the filming starts once and for all!

I saw somewhere (perhaps on this site) that filming for the Hobbit will begin March 21, but a friend told that it has already begun... Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

I personally think it would have been cooler to begin filming on March 25, the day Frodo destroyed the ring

Christopher Lee is a true Tolkienite. What a warrior. Almost 90 and trekking to New Zealand for one last hurrah as Saruman.

Full video from the Hobbit's press conference here: 3news.co.nz

It's a long watch but a good way to meet the cast. There seems to be a good atmosphere between them. Martin Freeman seems like a funny guy and I was surprised how quiet Richard Armitage was, I expected a to see a more rowdy bloke for Thorin.

Oh and they said that there will be singing

What could be interesting is how mature the cast here is. Cause the Hobbit is a much lighter piece of work as opposed to LotR that was a more serious book and it was portrayed by a much younger cast.

Thanks for posting this press conference vid, Aegor. Yeah...I was surprised at how quiet Armitage was, but then Thorin Oakenshield is supposed to be a very important, dignified dwarf. Very interesting to finally see the ensemble together and interacting with each other. I'm already trying to picture them in their dwarf makeup.

Singing!! I hope they include (among others) "We must away, ere break of day..."
There's so much opportunity for some great music in this movie.

I was thrilled to hear the singing mentioned, I hope they sing the mountain song at the beginning when they're at the party, that was the most memorable song for me when I was little and watching the animated movie.

I do hope they give them some dignity, 13 dwarves all being the comic relief that Gimli was in LotR would kill the film for me O_O I still suspect that for those who can't wait to see another burpy kickass Dwarves, they're going to make Kili and Fili crossbreeds of Merry, Pippin and Gimli, but as long as it's not the entire number...

I'm looking forward to the singing I agree, Starof, my favourite song in The Hobbit was the one about the ancient treasures as well
