Official release dates have been announced: “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” will be released on December 14th 2012., and it's follow up “The Hobbit: There and Back Again" on December 13th 2013.

I love the titles ... though I would also have liked "stronger" titles as someone had suggested once: "The Quest for Erebor" for the first and "The King Under the Mountain" for the second film - they've got that epic feel that ties in nicely with the rest of the LOTR Trilogy.

Still, these titles reflect the true nature of 'The Hobbit', that it is a much lighter story than it's prequel. Though I have to be honest, I wasn't sure about "An Unexpected Journey" at first. "There and Back Again" is, without question, spot on. But now that I see them together, there seems to be a nice flow to them hehe! Brilliant!

I think it's title An Unexpected Journey not party. But I agree that these titles are more suited to the lighter tone of the Hobbit. After all, it was written as a children's book.

question, was either arogorn or legolas in the hobbit? It would be cool if legolas helped bilbo free the dwarves!!!

They were around at that time, but are not present or mentioned in the book. I think it would be kind of cute to see a 10-year-old Aragorn in Rivendell, but it's not too likely PJ will show it. Legolas, though, is already confirmed.
I for one certainly hope noone will help Bilbo in freeing the dwarves. I would hate for Bilbo's character to be so downplayed by the scriptwriters as Frodo's was in the movies.

u r right! I saw a cast list where viggo was in the hobbit, so I was just wondering. Legolas just dosn't get enough greif or credit in the movies is all. I mean, he gave up part of his immortal life just to help on this quest where he could die, and he doesn't get too much credit is all.

I'm glad that Legolas is returning BUT - only if he does a short cameo (no dialogue, just a small appearance). For example, placing him beside his father when Thranduil is questioning the dwarves about the real purpose of their journey - just in the background, watching. That's it, no need to do some flashy action sequences - that's reserved for LOTR ... hehe!

One can only wish, Ilandir I bet movie-Legolas's fangirls would be very upset if he didn't show up in the Battle of the Five Armies, and PJ's team knows that.
Personally, I could live with Legolas speaking in The Hobbit (as long as he's not speaking in his father's place and making him feel redundant/silly), and heck, even fighting- as long as there's no superman business such as killing Smaug or Bolg or surfing down the Mountain on a shield.

noleme, you hit the nail on the head. One problem is that leggy has so little depth in the movies. Maby a litte faults in the hobbit could show that elves are not as immortal as we may think!

Oh, there should be some elven weaknesses alright, if the movie follows the book at least roughly I'm rather concerned about a few select superheroes saving battles, which was exactly was movie-Legolas was in LotR. I can't even describe how irritated it made me that everyone was fighting for their lives and dying, and in the middle of it all there were two indefeatable prodigys having good fun killing and showing off before those poor sods who were struck down by the enemy. Elves are not like that... okay, with the exception of Fëanor.

Ahem. On a different note, I wonder if PJ will explain Legolas's aversion to drinking in LotR-movie by having bad examples all about his realm... ^ ^

you know, they tried to have this big showdown between Arogorn and SAURON in the movie, but changed it to a troll instead. I was happy that they changed their minds. It irritates me that not only is Legolas shown as the action hero, but there's no injuries during the entire trilogy. It woul have made for a great scene between some charactors, maby make our elf show that he doubts as well.

I don't know that I would like that very much. That's a pretty big thing for Bilbo to bust them out on his own.
I don't mind Legolas doing something background-ish (like appearing in the Battle of the Five Armies would be okay), but I really don't want him being added and changing any really significant event.

I am not of the same mind as you on the last part of your sentence, but I too am looking forward to what PJ does with Mirkwood elves. Maybe they'll be a bit livelier than the LotR ones seemed to me. *crosses fingers* And I hope the drinking does not come with burping and being otherwise disgusting.
I wish they got on with the movie already, I would hate for it to take another 3 years before we see part 1.

I could go for some tipsy elves.
The word all over the Internet today is that we have a Bard...someone called Luke Evans. Can't say I'm familliar with him at all, but I'm glad the role has been cast.

And it would seem there is a further update...."Benedict Cumberbatch To Voice Smaug in 'The Hobbit'" or so it says here, the same site that confirmed that Luke Evans will play the Bard. Wonder how true that is?

Cumberbatch is Sherlock to Martin Freeman's (aka known as 'Bilbo') Watson on the new Sherlock Holmes show. Interesting.

In the picture that goes with the article, Evans looks like Orlando Bloom's brother.... I was rather hoping for another weather-beaten Ranger type of guy, but the makeup artists may yet surprise me. We'll see what they make of him.

I've actually never heard Cumberbatch's voice- is it deep and menacing?

maby, but Evans looks..... narrower? Cumberbatch sounds like a deeper versian of Orlando ( or maby it's just the british accent). I trust that he will change it, or he might as well say "would you visit me for a pot of tea my good dwarves?" while he peers through one of those one sided eye glasses!

What should they change, the accent? Not likely, IMO.

I for one won't be reminded of any of the actor base's previous roles, having seen none of them in any movies (except for the LotR ones). I'm not kidding. ^ ^

I think Cumberbatch is a good choice for Smaug - his voice, at least from the clips i've seen, seems to be pretty deep and dragon-like ... it's also cool that he's been cast as the Necromancer's voice (and that could only mean that the character won't be seen in that form, if any at all - which is good).

Bard's casting choice, I have to be honest, I've never seen Evans on screen but he seems to be a decent choice for the bowman. I'm sure Peter and the team are doing the right chioces here!

I must say, Benedict's perfect for Smaug. His voice is /very/ deep and.. yeah. Though I rather think the fact that his voice is so sexy will be a bit distracting and take away from his being a scary dragon.

I don't think that will be the case frodofan. I'm sure they'll alter his voice to some extent to create a more menacing voice. And besides, Smaug is supposed to have that kind of tone to his voice - a certain hidden menace, but luring at the same time ... we just have to wait and see I guess

I wish Evangeline wasn't going to be in The Hobbit. I like her, but now it's less likely that Dom will get his cameo.

Yeah, I'm not too happy about the inclusion of a female elf helping out Bilbo free the dwarves or whatever. I liked the fact that Bilbo had to figure it out and do it all on his own. That's part of what made him so great!

I couldn't agree more, Starof. I'm kind of worried about the words 'major role' pertaining to Tauriel.... just please don't let her fight...

If I'm not mistaken, they still don't have the voices for the three trolls, and Gwaihir, do they? It's possible they'll make Gwaihir similarly mute as in the LotR, but I'm curious about Bill, Tom and Bert.

Hello all! So this is where we're discussing the Hobbit. Hope you don't mind if I pop in!

Yes the voices of the trolls should be interesting. I guess they'll be CGI themselves.

I was very concerned over who they'd get to voice Smaug. I wasn't sure about Cumberbatch, but I heard he does a good Alan Rickman impression, and I adore his voice, so I'm happier now

I'm really worried about Dame Edna being the Great Goblin though. I hope he can act, because I for one don't want a camp sounding Goblin Lord.

I hope Gwahir will speak this time...guess it's kind of hard to talk when you're swooping in and rescuing someone ...but hopefully they'll visit the eagles' eyries (sp?) and he will speak to Gandalf. That would be really keeping with the spirit of the Hobbit, I think.

I'm not too sure about seeing Gwaihir speak ... though they could show his conversation with Gandalf from Bilbo's point of view i.e. he can see them but not hear them ...

I'm not sure I understand Illandir? Are you worried about Gwaihir looking unrealistic if they have him speak? I don't see any reason not to include the conversation between Gandalf and Gwaihir.

That's exactly what I'm worried about hehe! But they can always show them to us talking to each other, but out of Bilbo's (and the audience's) hearing ... it would provide a better solution I guess. Although, I still wouldn't mind if he speaks (it's just an idea hehe!)

Btw, first few pics of Bilbo (and the Dwarves), including Gandalf are online!: http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20504849,00.html#20980350
