I have been avidly following the news on The Hobbit to update my movie blog with, and yes, the full interview of the cast was a great way to get familiar with the 14 of them. Though I must say at certain points I found Martin a bit full of himself... and somewhere the camaraderie that we noticed among the earlier nine of The Fellowship seemed to be missing. But I also know that this is too early for all of them to be very friendly - so hopefully they all have great chemistry while working together and develop it over the months.

Apart from the bonding, the casting actually seems on the nose! Cannot wait for Thranduil to be cast as well as Bard. They are thinking of David Thennant for the Elven King but it still has to be confirmed. And what about Brian Blessed as King Dain? Or Leonard Nimoy giving the voice for Smaug?

I've heard about David Tennant possibly being cast but I've not heard of the others. Leonard Nimoy as Smaug? That would be something. Especially since I'm an avid Trekkie and Kingdom Hearts fan. :dizzy: And I don't know who Brian Blessed is.

What? Brian Blessed is like one of the best British actors out there ... hehe! He has one of the most deep voices and a great acting energy. Honestly, I think he would be a perfect fit for King Dain.

Regarding Smaug, I still stick to the idea that Jeremy Irons should voice him (Lion King or no).

As for David Tennant, although I like his performances, I still can't picture him as an Elven King - especially with such a comical reputation as he has ... we'll see ...

I was beginning to wonder if this Day would ever arrive.

So, according to the front page, Saoirse Ronan and Stuart Townsend have been cast, with Stuart Townsend having been cast as Bard the Bowman.

I know that townsend had quite a few difficulties with PJ and company last time, and that's what led to his dismissal. I wonder if the same thing will happen this time.

Apparently that was an April Fools joke, and a good one, congratulations to whoever though of Stuart Townsend. I wonder if he would find it funny...

Wow, all I have to say is thank goodness.
I'm not a big fan of either two, and know that Townsend is notoriously difficult to get along with on set.

I completely fell for the Townsend as Bard joke hook, line, and sinker. When will I learn?

Apparently not, yet. I mean, he stated he was interested in reprising the role but they didn't contact him about it. I hope they do!

Whaaaaaaat how can they not contact Hugo about being in the movie? Doesn't Elrond have a decent-sized part in the book? (Haven't read it in a while.) Don't make me shake my fist at you, filmmakers.

Edit: According to Hollywood Reporter, Hugo Weaving already signed on for the film: http://nerdreactor.com/2011/01/11/gandalf-and-the-gang-return-for-the-hobbit/. Does anyone else have another source for this? All the other news I've found doesn't have him confirmed yet.

I'm pretty sure he already signed on.
I'd be severely angry if we saw a non-Hugo Elrond.

They can't possibly cast someone else... I hope filming info starts leaking soon

Anyway, I'm really curious as to if they keep some of the musical themes we know from LotR, same as they kept the actors I'd love to hear the Shire theme, the mystical Ring theme, the mountain pass theme... Although I'd welcome a change in the Rivendell theme, the LotR one was too serious for me to hear in the Hobbit

Anyone else hoping they'll include the meeting of Gandalf and Thorin in Bree that is described in the Unfinished Tales, and possibly some flashbacks of Smaug's first assault on Erebor? (as long as they're not gory)

I just love the movie very much. It's kinda like when I watch the movie I'm in the real fantasy world. And I wanted to live with them forever. It's a very nice movie...

Well, according to the official statement that was released, Hugo Weaving's name wasn't included amongst the cast ... so we just have to wait and see I guess

Likewise, noleme, I'm mostly looking forward to an Erebor-Attack flashback as the intro to the first film - much like the prologue in FOTR (but instead of Galadriel narrating, Thorin would be a cool choice!).

Though I'm not sure about the Bree encounter between Gandalf and Thorin. I think it would slow the pacing of the film and be an unnecessary scene to the whole scope of the story - though I still wouldn't mind seeing it!

I don't know... I think the voiceover of Thorin that you suggest, blending into the Bree scene, followed by a brief exchange that establishes there is a mission to the mountain and a burglar is needed, and concluded by Gandalf saying mysteriously something along the vein of 'I know of just the person to carry this task out'... would be very cool and digestable for the public It's obvious the dialogue would in such case need to be cut to the bone, but I can very well imagine it taking place (not that I'd expect it to really be included, I just mean it could work without needless delays- we have two movies for the story after all...). I also think that if such a scene were followed by a shot of the peaceful Shire and Bilbo sitting in front of his doors like in the book, it would be a sweet reminder of the FotR extended prologue, following the same structure

You'd think that he'd be signed on because it makes sense, ya know? But as Ilandir pointed out, he's not on the official cast list that was released. I think a lot of people would be angry without him in the movie. He wants to do it too and from what I read, Del Toro confirmed him as part of the cast and then I guess Hugo got unconfirmed when Del Toro left the project? :dizzy:

Hugo Weaving's Elrond is the reason why I fell in love with the movies and books. I neeeeeeeed him in the Hobbit!

Said like that noleme, makes me rethink my position on the Bree scene. The way you've described it would make it really great as a scene till it finally introduces us to Bilbo at Bag End ... brilliant!

Btw, I'm guessing everyone here by now has seen PJ's new Hobbit set picture with a monitor displaying an interesting shot of possibly Riddles in the Dark ...

In case anyone's interested, Peter Jackson's announced Fili's replacement as well as Thranduil! Den O'Gorman will be playing Fili and Lee Pace will be playing Thranduil. You can take a look on his Facebook page, or you can visit TORn for more details.

Dark-haired man as blonde elf again... okay, I'll wait how it turns out. It could work for me like Craig Parker's casting did, or it could look like just a tanned guy with a wig like Bloom did. I hope the makeup/wig guys do a good job.

@Aowyn and Ilandir. You know that we have those here under the Humor section right?
Had a minor panic attack when I read that Martin Freeman was leaving but then I read it wasn't for good and he was just filming on something else.

Will Orlando Bloom be playing inThe Hobbit?
This is what Peter Jackson has to say!

Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf
