We did, there was a 'No PJ no Hobbit' petition, which I think is how Peter Jackson is even involved.

I'm kind of disappointed too, I really enjoyed Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth. I wanted to see what his take on the Hobbit would be like. I'm actually not too fond of Jackson's rendition. But it's still good.

MGM and Warner Bros. really want Peter Jackson to do the Hobbit after Del Toro stepped down.

Other filmakers however, such as David Yates, David Dobkin, and Brett Ratner also are looking to fill the director's seat too.

Jackson hasn't said "no" yet, though. There's still hope.

EDIT: David Yates says he's not interested and he's denying all claims about the Hobbit movie. http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2010/jun/16/harry-potter-hobbit-david-yates

Alfonso Cauron - the Prisoner of Azkaban guy? ... I hope not. I did not like that film. Admittedly it was better than the other Potter films, but still. No. :nono:
I hope Peter ends up directing it, but he probably won't. Hopefully Warner and MGM will convince him.

I agree with Sir Ian. Although it pains me to say it, if studios don't decide quickly, we may never see Gandalf as we would want to. After all he cannot keep postponing new offers forever, waiting for someone to make a move on the production.

So unless MGM sells the rights to someone else, there's no moving forward (since apparently, but not surprisingly, they want yet ANOTHER extension to pay their debts - which may lead filming to start in January 2011 rather than November/December this year).

It might not just be Gandalf different from the LotR films. If these delays keep on I don't see they can possibly do the White Council or Rivendell scenes with the original actors. I had trouble believing Hugo Weaving or Marton Csokas as an elf ten years ago. It's got to be worse now.

Thought the delays to make for fun fanfiction ideas.

Like all of you, I just truly hope that Peter (obviously the perfect director to do the job) is going to direct The Hobbit, and that it won't take TOO long to really start - cause it would be really dramatic to loose our Gandalf and the other 'old' actors. :/

This is all so complicated! When the first film is going to be out, I bet some of us are going to be half dead from the waiting and the stress already xD

That's fab, but I don't think I'll start celebrating just yet.

I'm really happy with their pick of Bilbo, especially because I so hated the idea of James McAvoy. I'm joining you in the crossing of fingers, Linwe.

If the original spirit evident in the making of LOTR can be regained through all this then it may be a worthy film. I'm sure Jackson will try to keep it as real, and leave out the clarinets, matches and golf.
I hope Martin Freeman can rise to the challenge but from what I've seen of him I doubt it. He will have to work hard, and even as I write he's probably bothering Ian Holme for tips. Crossed fingers, hope I'm wrong.

Really tarcolan? I don't know Martin Freeman at all, never heard of him actually, but I was pleased that he looked quite hobbitish in the cast article photo. But I would also love to see someone who can act as fabulously as Ian Holm, so you made me unsure there, suggesting he's not a very good actor. A bad actor would definitely spoil both movies for me :/

I was also happy about the dwarf casting ... with the exception of the desperado type of guy for one of the younger ones. Where would a dwarf get swarthy? *shakes head*

And I really really hope they'll stick to NZ- I don't want to see any artificially made Hollywood hobbit holes and other than NZ sceneries! Damn the economy drive, this would IMO pay off anyway!

I'm happy to hear that I'm so looking forward to seeing some of the LotR places in the movie again .. and the cast. Especially Ian McKellen, I loved him as Gandalf the Grey. I'm a bit tentative about the elves, though None have been cast so far apart from Hugo Weaving, have they?

No firm news about Hugo Weaving as yet. Now the problems about where the film will be shot are over I am expecting more casting announcements, hopefully in the near future. Keep checking the News page at CoE!

I hope so too, if only for the sake of consistency and fear of what other actor they might choose I'd even welcome seeing Orlando Bloom in the Hobbit, eventhough I can barely stand him in LotR... it would be awesome to show how these two most famous of JRRT's works are interentwined

PJ says Freeman's his first choice so I feel comfortable in that. And as I mentioned on the FB page, we know PJ will replace someone if he doesn't think they are working out (that's how we got a last-minute casting change to Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn)...so I have a very good feeling about it.
I really, really wanted ) Richard Armitage as Bard, as I realize I have mentioned many (many! ) times before, but I am warming to the idea of him as Thorin. I just think he's a fantastic actor and I'm really pleased he's getting this chance.

Ohh, I think Richard would have been a good Bard! I didn't even think about that. I think he'll be a good Thorin, though. It's hard to imagine him as a dwarf He's great!

I'm so glad that it's greenlit now! I can't wait!!!

You are correct, Radagast is not in the Hobbit... can you please point me to the article that said he's been cast?

Looks like we'll be favored with more of Howard Shore's genius. Check this out from Doug Adam's blog: Why NZ Matters
