True, now that you mention tweaking his voice it could work.

So it would be great if they chose him.

But I'm sure whoever it is they pick will be a wonderful Smaug.

I just finished watchign the cartoon version of The Hobbit. Not only did the Dwarves all look like caucasian Klingons, and Gollum looked like a giant toad, but the guy who voiced Smaug was just awful...
So Jeremy Irons, Christopher Lee, whatever works. Haha.

Oh yes! I've watched the cartoon version of the hobbit. H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E! Which I guess you have to think, they did their best at that time ( it was the 70s). I must so though, whenever I watch it, it gives me a real good laugh.

Let's hope PJ and GT's version will be better.

Haha, I have both the vhs tape and the read along record of that. The record is worse than the movie and the movie is worse than the book.

The animation wasn't too impressive at all. Like I said, caucasian Dwarf Klingons.

Just seen David Tennant on Breakfast TV. He says he has 'something in the pipeline' to follow Dr Who ... but isn't allowed to say what ... erm ... Thranduil in "The Hobbit" perhaps? ... a slightly paranoid elf-king with a short fuse? Yes please.

David Tennant? An elf? I don't know. I could see him as one of the dwarves, Fili or Kili. Possibly Bilbo, but Thranduil?

I can't wait till I see this movie. I really hope they find a good ( not to mention handsome) actor to play Thranduil. Maybe Eric Bana or Johnny Depp...

Here's an interesting item from spoilertv.com:official casting call

Note Itaril the female elf and Frodo's parents, Primula and Drogo. Very interesting....

Well, according to the latest update on theonering.net, this list of lead roles is not a valid one.

Russell Crowe could make a great Beorn.
As for Bard, I say Richard Armitage.
And as long as we're going for "big" names, I still say Colin Firth would make a great Bilbo

humph....I had my suspicions. But actually, I'm relieved. The female elf role was worrying me.

So, according to some of these sources, we will indeed see Radagast in the film(s)?

Well if they're going to show the White Council in the second one, I would assume so. But if they did that they'd have to include Galadriel because she's the one who organized it all, (would the bring Cate Blanchet back or someone new?), and Saruman as well. And if, I'm assuming, they show the overthrowing of Dol Guldur would they be showing a bit of Sauron?

I have heard that they want Cate Blanchet to come back as Galadriel. Unfortunately I can't post the link for I have forgotten where I found it

TheOneRing.net is reporting that Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis are the only actors confirmed to reprise their roles of Gandalf and Gollum/Smeagol, and that Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett are likely to be reprising Elrond and Galadriel, respectively.

The big question for most people is a) who will play Bilbo and b) will Aragorn and Legolas appear in the "bridge", or second film, that is currently being written and, according to PJ, should be delivered to the studio by Christmas of this year. Unfortunately, everyone will have to wait impatiently for that answer, although Viggo Mortensen has said publicly that he would not want anyone to play Aragorn, other than himself, and that he already has the sword and the costume.

If some of the trilogy characters do appear in the bridge, I cannot see PJ casting anyone other than the original actors, as audiences so strongly identify them with their characters.

Nice find Becky!

Writing on his official website, Sir Ian reports that shooting of the two films is expected to take more than a year

I guess this means it will take a miracle to see the Hobbit for Christmas next year...

According to studio New Line, the first film will be an adaptation of The Hobbit, the novel Tolkien published before his Lord of the Rings cycle.

The second will be an original story focusing on the 60 years between the book and the beginning of the Rings trilogy.

But this is brilliant news! I would hate it if the Hobbit were to be split in half and I've been cheering for the second movie to be the bridge as it was first announced. Can't wait to see what the writers have in store for us

It would be great indeed if the second film was a bridge. But unfortunately I think this is not so and the story found on that link is either outdated or mis-informed ... but lets not hope so!

Apparently there's a new update (sort of) on the filming of 'The Hobbit' ... though I'm not sure how official or true this really is ...

Delayed again!
But let´s hope it´s absolutely perfect when it comes out. And that it´s in 3D ´cos that´d be so awesome.
It will probably start a new "Tolkien-merchandise-craze"-wave

Bah, bloody 3D :banghead:

Gwen you should check Sideshow or Weta's websites, the merchandise craze never stopped (Weta just sold 9 masterwork Strider's swords for 8000 NZD$ a piece, took them a week or two)

I agree with aegor on the matter of 3D, though maybe not as harshly
3D looks visually stunning, but The Hobbit doesn't need it to be a wonderful movie. Just because you can make it 3D doesn't mean you should. After Avatar's success, it seems to be used as a gimmick to attract audiences and charge more.
