The things that I find wrong with 3D is that it further takes the attention away from the story and makes if easier to get distracted wtih all the cool things flying around your head. Add to that the eye problems you get with the uncomfortbale 3D glasses during the 3 hours of film and the fact that most of us willl see the movie once in a theater and a few dozen times home on the DVD where 3D doesn't count.

It really feels a waste to demand more budget purely on special effects when the project hasn't received a green light yet and to postpone the release of the movie for many more months. We've waited long enough I think...

(here's hoping that PJ or GdT read our forums ).

I completely agree with both of you. I couldn't care less about 3D. It seems to pop up every 20 or so years and dies out just as quickly so hopefully it will die out again. Supposedly, they are developing 3D televisions and dvd players so we can have the "3D experience" at home but who is really going to shell out a bunch of money on the new equipment. Especially after HD tv's and blu-ray players.

I also agree that we have waited long enough and honestly, it's made my enthusiasm about the movie die out. Hopefully, that will change when it finally gets made.

Yes, of course it doesn´t need to be 3D. That´d be unavailable at home tvs anyway... and who knows maybe the 3D fixing would postpone the release date even further... But as you´ve maybe heard there has been some talk of making it in 3D.
Now I´ll stop babbling about the unwanted word. No hard feelings?

Hi

I'm just so relieved to know that 1 thing is for sure: Howard Shore will be making the music to The Hobbit. I can't wait. I am a huge fan of the LOTR soundtrack - I think it's the best movie music ever.
I wonder how Howard will expand the themes for the Hobbits and the Dwarves!!

It's going to be awesome!

I agree with you Dwarflord on the soundtrack.

How he will expand the music for the Hobbit and the Dwarves? All he has to do is base the soundtrack on FOTR's 'Journey in the Dark' - the climax is the best in the whole Trilogy, and it always reminds me of when the Hobbit and the Dwarves discover the treasure under the Lonely Mountain - it fits perfectly.

Exactly Ilandir!

It always sends shivers down my spine... the buildup and the moment when the music bursts out, when they're in the dark....

Can't wait!!!!!!!

On the topic of the blu-ray version, did anyone see that they had the animated bakshi version on blu-ray? I thought it was so funny because a lot of people don't like it. It was right next to the trilogy blu-ray which was someting like 76 dollars.

I might get the regular Bakshi version just to round out my collection, but blu-ray? um...no.

yeah, sorry. Dolwen started talking about 3D and Blu-ray so I remembered the Blu-ray Bakshi and LotR.
Back on topic! I'd love to hear Howard Shore do more music for the dwarves, Journey in the Dark and Khazad-dum were my favorite tracks next to the Rohan and Gondor theme.

Some great news from PJ's Wall Street Journal interview.

I'm very happy to hear that they are filming behind the scene documentaries for the Hobbit (already 20 to 30 hours have been filmed ). We can all look forward to a special extended edition of the Hobbit that will be on par with the amazing LotR EEs. Cheers Peter!

Yeah 2013 is bad but it all matters very little when we'll get the awesome amazing God of acting Ronan Keating to star in the movie!!! And if he's cast for anything less than Bilbo Baggins it will be a crime against art and humanity in general :rolling: :banghead:

Phew! New news just in from theonering.net website ... apparently the first part is still set for a 2012 release. Better than 2013 but still abit far away than 2011 ... anyway ...

Finally some more news revealed by GdT:

Q: We've been following your production of THE HOBBIT, and every time the production gets delayed. Do you know when you're actually going to start and get on set?

Guillermo del Toro: There cannot be any start dates really until the MGM situation is resolved, because they do hold a considerable portion of the rights, and it's impossible to make a unilateral decision by New Line or Warners to give the greenlight to proceed. We really believe that things will be known after the fact of MGM's fate. Whether they stay and get supported, or they get bought, or they transfer some of the rights: nobody knows. We've been caught in a very tangled negotiation.

Now I've been on the project for nearly two years. We have designed all the creatures; we have designed the sets and wardrobes; we have done animatics and planned very lengthy action sequences and scary sequences and funny sequences. We are very, very prepared for when it's finally triggered, but we don't know anything is sold.

Q: The story that was reported earlier today that THE HOBBIT has been greenlit and will be shot in 3D, that is false?

Del Toro: On both counts, there are no final answers. It is not greenlit. That is categorical. And 3D has been discussed literally once in the room. The budget and the schedule and everything that we are handling - the cost of the film, the number of days it would take to shoot - is being handled right now without looking towards 3D. Is there a chance it will become 3D in the future? Maybe. Right now, it's not being planned as such.

Quite exciting to hear they've designed all the sets and costumes

I sincerely hope that's not real. I just can't believe Guillermo would leave like that.

That's really too bad, but I don't think we can blame him. Fame is a fickle mistress, and right now he's got a ticket to do pretty much whatever he wants. If he stays in the shadows long enough that people forget who he is, he loses that and likely will never get it back. I'm sure there are projects he wants to do that have been put on hold due to the delays on The Hobbit.

Hopefully PJ will find someone equally well-suited to the project, and hopefully the issue with the rights will be cleared up so they can actually begin filming before the end of the year.

I saw it on theonering.net first, which I consider very reliable

Well it's his loss. If PJ bailed on the Rings when things got difficult he would still be making B horrors, instead of being a movie legend that he already is. I'm really curious as to what better jobs GdT hopes to land.

But I'm guessing the news bulletin is most likely false...

If it is true however it will be most interesting to see who the new director will be. Will Peter decide to compete against himself (which was the reason he didn't want the job in the first place)? If not then I'd put my money on Neill Blomkamp who's Peter's friend and who did a spectacular job with District 9.

edit: looks like it's true. I just saw Guillermo's post on TORN's forums. So, GdT, see ya in a short documentary in the Hobbit EE.

Wait, so it is true that he's leaving? or it is true that the bulliten was fake? I find it hard to believe he's leaving after designing concepts of Smaug, all the creatures, sets, and costumes. He sounded really excited about it.

It's true that he's leaving

Here's a copy of his post from TORN:

I intend to post a more lengthy post later in the week. Today is a day where I feel like collecting myself and meditating about all things past present and future. nevertheless I didn't want the day to be over without dropping you all a line. Compa- I did intended to be the Irving K of middle Earth and your "handle" in fact always inspired me to do good. Much of the visual design and previs and creatures etc is likely to survive into the final movie, so, I'll be delighted to see the final film and trust that the right director will step in into this massive endeavour.

I will drop by soon enough and I want to thank you all for the kindness, wrmth and wisdom you have shared with me.

Yours Truly

well, not real happy that Guillermo is ditching the Hobbit, I'm sure he's got reasons of his own, but I do hope Jackson will take over. I think he should have been the one doing it all along, seeing as he was the one who did LOTR, and would most likely keep the Hobbit true. Just my opinion.

Couldn't the fans do something like do a protest or something? Maybe that will get their attention that we are tired of the delays.

And I'm mad that Del Toro left. I bet he would have made an awesome director. He has some really good movies.
