Does anyone here know for sure if there is going to be a Hobbit movie soon? If so, will Peter Jackson direct it? Who will be in it? I've heard rumors that there will be one and that there won't be one, so i'm really not sure at all. I hope so though

That's kind of what this whole thread is about, but here's a re-cap:

So far, the movies plan to be released December 2011 and December 2012.

Peter Jackson is the Executive Producer, del Toro is the director.

The confirmed actors will be Ian Mckellen as Gandalf and Andy Serkis as Gollum.

Just to add to Linwe's post: Howard Shore is confirmed as the music composer too.

Does anyone know who they're going to get to play Bilbo? They won't use the same one from the Trilogy will they?

They've decided, but won't tell us yet.

( figures)

And no, Ian Holm won't play Bilbo again.

All this business with GdT, PJ etc. keeping hush-hush about their casting choices is really bugging me. Come on, we need some facts.
Speaking of casting, I've thought of a part that the guy from Hellboy could play. Beorn!

The latest rumour is that Brian Cox who played Agammenon in Troy has been tapped to play Thorin, but this has not been confirmed by anyone actually in the know.

Attention Hobbit Film Thread readers:

Since rumors about The Hobbit movie are flying thick and fast, please include the name/website of your source if possible. And please: let it be a reasonably reliable source. While it's fun to speculate, it doesn't really do us much good to just say, "I heard thus-and-so..." and leave it at that. I don't know if it's from your neighbor/boyfriend/girlfriend/old Aunt Fanny.

Thank you very much.

I wish there was a way that they could get more of the characters from LOTR to return. Several sources are saying that many of the cast members have opted not to return even if the roles were written for them.

Any more news on the casting of Bilbo?

I haven't heard much. I only know that Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, and andy Serkis have been confirmed to reprise their roles.

Just watched TT [again] last night. I really need to post more on the forum, haha. And all I could think about last night was, 'The Hobbit'! I'm glad to see that Howard Shore is confirmed for the music; couldnt imagine the OST without him.

The search for Bilbo has begun!

Also, just thought I'd share a bit of a tidbit from the article-

“Apart from Ian McKellen, who we obviously want to return as Gandalf, we are not really offering any roles to anybody until we’ve done a casting sweep,” Jackson said.

-Peter Jackson

So this means that the parts of Elrond and Gollum are not reserved for Hugo Weaving and Andy Serkis. Interesting. I'm sure both of them will each be eventually cast for their respective roles in the trilogy. I hope at least.

Thanks for that link, Ashbrook.

I'm glad they're not making it a 'star-driven' movie.

I do hope that Andy and Hugo are cast though. I couldn't imagine those roles being played by anyone else.

Hopefully we'll be able to get more updates on this soon.

We now know that Hugo and (possibly) Cate Blanchett will be returning, and Andy seems to think he's in it (says he is on his site)

Amen to that. It seems as though it's gonna be just like LotR. I mean, yeah Elijah was big, Ian, Cate, and Liv to name a few...but there were more lesser knowns and that was nice to see. They were one of the greatest ensembles, and I'm sure that they are gonna go the same direction with these movies.

I do hope that Hugo, Andy, and Cate will return. That would be AMAZING!

I'm almost positive Andy Serkis will be playing Gollum again. Gollum basically has a cult following in Hollywood, and people will be delighted to hear "my preccccciousssss" again.
I know that Hugo has been approached by PJ, but I know nothing about Cate Blanchett being in the movie. Would be awesome though.

Just a thought, since a White Council angle has all but been confirmed with the recent news of Cate Blanchett being signed on, who is going to be taking over the role of Saruman? Christopher Lee has already said that he cannot do The Hobbit due to his age (he's pushing 90). So who could be a worthy replacement?

I've though of that aswell. And I can't think of anyone else who can replace Sir Christopher Lee - he's now been fixed in my mind as Saruman (with the deep voice) so I think I'll find it hard to accept someone else as a replacement ... hehe

Alot of people on this forum were suggesting Jeremy Irons, but I'm not quite sure if he can pull off Saruman. He certainly has the voice, but Christopher Lee pulled off Saruman just perfectly. However, Jeremy Irons is the only person I can think of as an adequate replacement at the moment.

I'm not really liking the fact that they're thinking about bringing Galadriel back. If it's for the White Council then I suppose it's okay. (though I'm still iffy on it) But she definatley does not belong in the Hobbit. I'm glad they're making progress with the script though. The studio likes it and Ian McKellen already has a copy, so it sounds like things are going well. I'm still a bit confused on who the studio is though? I though New Line no longer existed due to the lawsuits?

From the article:
C) Is there any trouble brewing with WB? Not at all.

WB=studio=Warner Bros.=company supporting the Hobbit? So Warner Bros. is supporting the Hobbit? I'm not completley asleep yet.

According to PJ and GDT, the films will cover Gandalf's off-journey in the Hobbitt as well involving the White Council, and his encounter with the necromancer, so I can see Galadriel being involved in that. I personally like it.

I agree too. I'm just not sure about Saruman's replacement. Jeremy Irons wouldn't fit I think - I've always thought he'd make a perfect Smaug voice though! ... hehe

Christopher Lee had stated through his website that he's very interested in providing the voice for Smaug. I'm al for Lee being apart of the Hobbit, but with him voicing Smaug, it could seem too obvious.

Yeah, he would be an awesome voice for him, but all I would be able to picture would be Saruman.

Wow, after listening to Jeremy Irons voice Scar in the Lion King, I'm putting him for Smaug on my wishlist.

They would probably be able to tweek Lee's voice enough though a computer to make him sound different enough for Smaug...kinda like how John Rhys Davies played both Gimli and Treebeard. It wasn't recognizable enough to know immediately that was the same voice without seeing it in the credits. So.. it *is* a possibility...
