Today, 3rd January, is the birthday of J.R.R. Tolkien. He was born 113 years ago on 3rd January 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The Tolkien Society suggest that at 9pm in your local time you raise a glass and celebrate his life and work with a toast to “The Professor”.

Mail & Guardian Online report on The Ring Thing, a Swiss parody of The Lord of the Rings movies. Filmed in the mountains of Switzerland and featuring Edward Piccin as Friedo, the film is set to become the biggest Swiss box office hit of 2004.

Medical students at University College London, were set the task of explaining Gollum’s behaviour. A paper published in the British Medical Journal reveals that their diagnosis was that Gollum, “fulfils seven of the nine criteria for schizoid personality disorder”. A letter written by JRR Tolkien in 1971 was sold today at auction in Swindon, UK, for £1176 ($2,284.80). In the letter to Miss Morley, who had written to him asking for work, Tolkien writes about the negative side of being a celebrity. You can read the full story at Scotsman.com.
