LotR marathon and festival in Geneva, NY

Funding saves one of The Two Towers
Funding has been made available to carry out much needed emergency repairs on Perrott’s Folly in Birmingham, UK. Perrott’s Folly and Waterworks Tower are believed to have been Tolkien’s inspiration for The Two Towers. You can read the full story at icBirmingham.com.

The Shire Country Park
To honor Tolkien’s associations with the area, The Millstream Project, a city nature reserve in Birmingham, has been re-named The Shire Country Park. Richard Crawshaw, from the Tolkien Society hopes, “renaming the park was the first step towards creating a centre dedicated to the author”. You can read the full story at Scotsman.com.

A toast to “The Professor”
Today, 3rd January, is the birthday of J.R.R. Tolkien. He was born 113 years ago on 3rd January 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The Tolkien Society suggest that at 9pm in your local time you raise a glass and celebrate his life and work with a toast to “The Professor”.

The Oxford experience
A one week residential course on The Inklings will be held at Christ Church College, Oxford, UK from 31st July to 5th August 2005. On Tuesday January 11th Michael Drout, Tolkien scholar and associate professor of English at Wheaton College will give a talk entitled, “Understanding J.R.R. Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings”. The Ring Thing
Mail & Guardian Online report on The Ring Thing, a Swiss parody of The Lord of the Rings movies. Filmed in the mountains of Switzerland and featuring Edward Piccin as Friedo, the film is set to become the biggest Swiss box office hit of 2004.
