Well, maybe I am a majority of one, but the animated film, Lord of the Rings, was my first ever contact with Tolkien’s work. I saw it way back in 1978 when it first came out and thought it was great. I even managed to procure the actual poster from outside the cinema, where my son and I went to see it.
I was actually sceptical when I heard they were making a film of Lord of the Rings. Of course, those thoughts were swept away by the whole experience of Peter Jackson’s three wonderful films.
However, back to Bakshi. I can only say that I have the video, and would jump at the opportunity to see the animated version on the big screen. 😀
I saw Bakshi’s film in the theatre in 1978, and I’ve seen it about 20 times since then. I think it is one of the most underrated films in recent memory. I think the characterizations are as good as Jackson’s and in many cases better. I would also jump at the chance to see it in the theatre again.
