The Tolkien Society suggest “To make the Birthday Toast, you stand, raise a glass of your choice of drink (not necessarily alcoholic), and say the words ‘The Professor’ before taking a sip (or swig, if that’s more appropriate for your drink). Sit and enjoy the rest of your drink”

I shall most certainly and heartily join in the toast to our favourite author. We can’t wish him long life alas, but we can wish immortality to his books. What a legacy!
However, I think it’s just as well he didn’t live to see the film. I think parts of it would have made him absolutely livid.
Here’s to a great man with a great mind. He’ll always be alive in our hearts *sniff* Happy Birthday, dear Professor!
