If she is a background character, why not… If not, I’ll fume. Starofdunedain, apart from the possibility of this actress being a female Bard(-ette), I could think of one other nightmare of mine. I imagine the studios (especially if it’s the Warners, isn’t it?) demand of PJ’s team to ‘smuggle in’ as many female characters as possible, in the name of gender equality. Money and political correctness first, respect towards author comes second. Plus, when in LotR the plans to get Arwen to Helm’s Deep were discarded, I guess those who were in favour of filming said scenes would now see their chance in The Hobbit, and happily invent a lovely kickass female elf with a blade or bow for the Mirkwood scenes, to capture the dwarves or kill spiders or whatever. I can so imagine them doing that.
I’m nervous about this news.
I was thinking that maybe they’ve cast her as Thranduil’s wife, the only female character I can see them “smuggling in” without tipping the story on its head – but a 16-year-old would probably be considered too young to play a wife and mother – and an elf to boot! Maybe she’s playing Legolas’s sister or something?
Or maybe she’s *gulps* Bilbo’s love interest back home? (Again, though, age issues would make that a bit… weird, to say the least.)
I hope they don’t start just throwing in fabricated characters for the sake of warding off the PC brigade, though. Especially if said fabricated characters are made important enough to get their own subplot.
But if the character doesn’t have a huge role, I’ll look forward to seeing her. As far as I can tell from Lovely Bones, Saoirse is an excellent actress, and I’m sure she’ll do well.
I really didn’t need to see another female in the Hobbit besides Galadriel, and she actually appears in a side story so there’s no big problems. “Itaril” just seems to fit nowhere in the puzzle. Why would it be even considered when they know that the books are sacred to the fans?
I hope I’m wrong but does anyone ealse think that if she’s going to be an elven-warrior-love-interest the most likely candidate for the love interest would be Legolas… surely they wouldn’t mess with the story that much
Saoirse is a good actress with a sweet look anyway, so I wouldn’t mind her as a background character like the rohirrim kids and their mother were in LotR movies. As long as it doesn’t go further than that.
Well, I won’t deny that I’m a bit worried about what role she might have been cast to play, but I’m going to try and stay positive about this… Maybe she could be a young and annoying Lobelia Bracegirdle?? 🙂

What role could she possibly have? =/ One of the people of Dale?

However, it’s not truely confirmed yet. It’s just a hint-like side notion — http://www.iftn.ie/news/?act1=record&only=1&aid=73&rid=4283633&tpl=archnews&force=1

So the rumor is false.
