I don’t think there’s anything new here – we always knew that NL *might* not make the Hobbit, because there are some obscure rights issues. So it’s not set in concrete that NL will make it, and Shaye knows that. I don’t think they are “giving up” on it or anything, it’s just the way the rights stand. He can’t say “we are definitely making the Hobbit”, until he is definitely making the Hobbit. Sure they’ve thrown out dates and stuff, when they propose it would be done, but nothing is confirmed.
Moreover, I think it was a throwaway line – no, word – by Shaye – “if”. I don’t think he carefully formulated what he was going to say in his head before he said it, it was more the fact that he promises to make a good film is what he was trying to get at, more like, “Yeah look if we make the Hobbit, it’ll be GOOD I PROMISE!”, instead of “IF we make the Hobbit…”. If you follow me.
In any case, I hope that NL does drop the Hobbit, or that anything happens to leave the door open for PJ.
I hope don’t give up on the Hobbit. You can’t have LOTR without it!! You’re missing one of the biggest pieces in the LOTR timeline, and I think they would make a big mistake.
Just me, of course, but I know there are thousands more like me who wish the same.
