You know the chick with the horse? The one that makes all those weird appearances in places you don’t expect her? Dark hair, kissable lips, hooks up with the lead guy…yeah, you know who. That’s Arwen.
Arwen is Elrond’s daughter. As such, she’s Aragorn’s foster-sister. Not that that got in the way of the two of them falling head over heels: she’s even willing to give up her immortality for him. As a token of this, she gives ‘Estel’ a small pendant called the Evenstar.
This doesn’t prevent Aragorn from dumping Arwen after Elrond puts the pressure on him – which in fact changes nothing, because Aragorn doesn’t fall for blonde princess Éowyn (he’s still in love with Arwen, obviously) and Arwen starts to get these visions of future sons (she’s still in love with Aragorn, obviously). Small wonder that at the end of the movie, the two love birds are reunited, which is celebrated with one wet kiss! Hoozah!
Aside from being the main love interest in the trilogy (aside from – according to some – Sam), Arwen doesn’t have very much to do: the most thrilling thing she does after rescuing Frodo from the Ringwraiths is reading a scary novel. Oh, and, she attempts at dying somewhere halfway Return of the King, but fails miserably because Aragorn manages to defeat Sauron. Well, Frodo does that, of course, but that’s not very romantic, is it?
All kidding aside, Arwen is a very substantial character in the trilogy, moreso in the movies than in the books.
