Ai! laurië lantar lassi súrinen, yéni unótimë ve rámar aldaron!
Like the Evenstar – the eighth song on the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers soundtrack, Farewell to Lórien is one of the majestic, and mystical elf-orientated songs. Farewell to Lórien is played in the Extended Edition of the Fellowship of the Ring movie; it can be found on the Limited Edition of the Two Towers soundtrack.
In the first film of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, we see very little of the land of Lothlórien; we are left with its mystery, wonder and a sense of the elvish magic this wonderful location possesses. Howard Shore manages to capture and illustrate all of Lothlórien’s magical and Elvish qualities through wonderful and ethereal tunes and express it through his song Farewell to Lórien.
Of course, Howard Shore is not the only one who adds beauty to this song. Farewell to Lórien starts off with the voice of Hilary Summers, who can perfectly exemplify the aura an audience would receive from this magical elven realm. Hilary Summers sings in the High-elven tongue of Quenya, with the lyrics borrowed from Namárië (Galadriel’s Lament in Lórien). Which is only fitting, seeing as how the song is played during the departure of the Fellowship from Lothlórien. And with the immense poetic beauty of the lyrics of Namárië, Farewell to Lórien is a most beautiful song that takes your breath away.
Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind, long years numberless as the wings of trees!
