Because reading is a lot more fun when you can talk about it afterwards, CoE decided to revive an old project in the Spring of 2003: the Book Club. The point of this sub-forum of the Books Forum was to read the works of J.R.R. Tolkien in group, and chapter by chapter, and that way provide members with an opportunity to read them for the first time with some support, or to learn some new things about the book through discussion.
Now we are nearing the end of Frodo’s journey, and we too will be taking the ship to Valinor… In ‘The Silmarillion’ we will learn more about the lay of Beren and Lúthien, and why the marriage of Aragorn and Arwen was so important for Middle-earth. But also who Elbereth is, where the light comes from in Galadriel’s phial and why the Rohirrim call themselves ‘Eorlingas’.
This is an invitation for everyone to go out, find a copy of the Silmarillion and start reading! The first assignment will be posted in the Book Club forum on September 27th, so watch this spot for more information.
If you’re interested in joining, all you have to do is start reading and post in the chapter threads. You don’t need to sign up anywhere, or do anything strange.
If this is a bad time for you to start reading, don’t worry, you can always join in later, bring old chapters back on top and add questions to the list.
See you soon!

This is so great! The Silmarillion is the best book ever, and is essential to a deeper understanding of the Lord of the Rings, and almost all of Tolkien’s books!! Hantanyel!!
How exciting. It’s been so long since I’ve just wandered around on this wonderful site. I was pleased to have wandered in and discovered this opportunity. I’ve been wanting to read the Silmarillion for ‘an age’. Perhaps this will prompt me to do so.
