I agree with this author 100%. The movies can and should be remade. The exisiting trilogy will always be a great cinematic achievement, but they could still be better. The only thing I disagree with are the actors he claimed could have played Gandalf as well as Sir Ian. While I’m sure in twenty years there will be another actor who could play Gandalf, none of the actors listed would have been as good as Sir Ian. Sir Ian is Gandalf to me.
“Every fanboy who watched LOTR is privately convinced that he could do a better job directing. One day, one of those fanboys will be in a position to do so.”
That fan[girl] will be me.
I would like to see it remade – not soon, though. In twenty or so years, I would love to see a new version. It seems difficult to imagine anyone doing a better job than PJ, but I, for one, will always be willing to watch some sort of LotR.
*ooo theres so much i wanna say!!! first of all, MAYBE they should make a remake…but im not so sure. ya i’d like to see a version with the parts that p.j. cut out in it…but then again, HIS middle earth is what ive kinda accepted as my own (after all i’m only reading the books after seeing the movies). so i’m kinda torn….HOWEVER, i think that before they even THINK of making a remake of LOTR, maybe they should consider working on something thats not done yet–and an even BIGGER project too—so how bout making a movie of ‘The SILMARILLION’??? I would LOVE to see that on film!!!!! *
I don’t think a remake of LOTR will ever be done, because it is such a classic. Perhaps in 100 yrs or so, but even then it won’t even come close! You just don’t do remakes of the legends. But I do hope that Pete does the Silmerillion sometime in the future- and I can’t wait to see the Hobbit!
Hmmmm… there are some really good points here….. On the other hand, the casting job for the trilogy was superb. Sure, you can replace Sir Ian McKellen with Sean Connery, but the bigger the name, the greater the possibility of a prima donna (and I am not saying that Sean Connery is a prima donna. As far as I know, he’s a nice guy.). But, the people Peter Jackson cast are a team. The whole trilogy is about teamwork! The actors were friends on AND off camera, and that comes through in the movies. Actors can PRETEND to like someone, but it’s not the same. (May I bring up Mr. Townsend and Mr. Jackson?… oh, wait, they weren’t pretending to like each other… whoops.) Sure, you can have the further adventures of Tolkien’s characters, but that doesn’t mean that they’re THE fellowship.
I agree with the author except in his statement that several people could play
Gandalf better than Ian McKellen, and the author seems to not fully recognize just how well Peter Jackson made the movies.
How about 10 years, so I can play Eowyn or Galadriel?
Why would any ‘fanboy’ (and girl) want to remake the movies? The trilogy has been SO acclaimed that directors would just merely be intimidated by the high standards Peter Jackson had already put up. 11 Academy Awards? Not EVERY ‘fanboy’ can match that…in fact, they’d just instantly give up!
Oh they can try all right, it would be interesting to see a remake, though I don’t think it would be necessarily any BETTER. It would certainly be really hard/next to impossible to beat the overall effect and acheivement of PJ’s LotR. What will make it even more difficult is that people already know a very good LotR film so if they do make a remake, they will have very high expectations.
And…there will not be ANYONE who can will be able to produce a score better than Howard Shore’s!
I think that someone could TRY to do it, but I doubt anyone can handle the responceablity. I mean, not that PJ has made LOTR, then the next one has to be compared to Tolkien AND PJ, and just producing LOTR wouldn’t be enough. I just think that would be too much to handle. And many like the movie the way it is, I hope. Hee hee.
I don’t think they should do a remake. I love the trilogy the way it is. Yes….there will be better computer effects and it will be alot cheaper, but you just wouldn’t get the feel for the setting of the movie if it was all done in graphics. I guess if they did make a remake i would see it but I don’t think that i would like it as much. The section of the article about the actors really ticked me off.

I like the movies the way they are. I don’t see why we need a remake.

Oh, and Michael Caine as Gandalf? Riiiiiight…
