Tired of January? How about Afteryule?

Note that, contrary to what professor Tolkien writes in his appendix in LotR, Shire leap years are assumed to coincide with ours, which means we have an extra leap year every 400 years, or so.

  1. This is so great!!! Thanks!!! But what about the reckoning of Rivendell? We should have that too. (today is the 47th day of Hirve) We are the council of Elrond which took place in RIVENDELL, so we should have Rivendell dates. Right? That would be so cool!! Do the reckoning of Rivendell next. PLEASE!!!

  2. This is so cool. HURRAH for the Shire. It works, It really works :-). Just follow the instructions. I’m a very happy hobbitmom :-). Thanks to whoever did this.

  3. OK.

Yes, Tolkien described the Reckoning of Rivendell.

NO, I dont think I’ll be able to implement that.

Why? because the Reckoning of Rivendell has *three* extra days each leap year, instead of just one. Also said leap years occur once every twelve, instead of four, years.

  4. I noticed that the Shire date that is displayed in the upper right hand corner of the page is 10 days ahead of ours. Is that correct? I’ve been looking at different texts and there seems to be some confusion about this. The appendix at the back of Tolkien’s book says that OUR New Year’s Day would occur on the 9th day of the Shire New Year. That would mean that today would be Afteryule 18, no? Any thoughts on this, anyone?
