While searching for a dream analysis website, I found an interesting detailed essay comparing The Lord of the Rings with the dream symbolism of psychologist Carl Jung. The author, Craig Jarman, references such broad topics as religion, environmentalism, war, and the invention of plastic to discuss the Jungian aspects of Frodo Baggins’ quest of Returning the Ring.
Excerpt:
‘Just as we are the hobbits who stand in fear of the Dark Lord, we are also this Dark Lord himself. It is now exceedingly important that we awaken to and acknowledge this darker force inside each of us. Aside from our destructive technology we must also address our inability to honour and respect the Earth.’

Excellent! I have really been struck by the strong archetypal imagery in the trilogy, so I am pleased to see someone tackle this in an extended manner. Looking forward to reading it.
I need to get hold of a copy. Psychology is one of my favorite subjects, and even if they’re not really valid, I love reading dream interpretation books.
Excellent. I just started reading this. Very interesting! It expounds on the same thoughts I’ve had about why the trilogy is so relevant in today’s world. I am also a big fan of Jung. I hope the rest of it is as intriguing as the first two chapters.
Peace.
