Duh! That was an extraordinarily enlightening article with a really profound statement! If this is indeed a leading German authority on literature, it’s no way we Germans haven’t produced all that much good literature since Goethe!
I would question that LOTR is really a children’s book, given the intricate plot lines, different cultural sources Tolkien used, and the languages he created. But my main point is that prof. K’s argument is much too simplistic. We can learn a lot from literature, I agree to that. But look, for example, at the present situation in Iraq. Does anyone really think that if Pres. Bush had read LOTR, he would seek a peaceful solution of the conflict and not go to war, as he almost certainly will?
