Yay! This is a refreshing change from all of the pointless Legolas-bashing I’ve been reading lately. I’m so proud of myself, I actually understood the archery terms in the article! ^_^
Absolutely awsome! I spent forever reading dusty Encyclopedia Britannicas trying to find out more about Archery, but why bust my little mortal eyes on tiny print on thin paper when I can just come and read this! Mmm, everyone seems to have more luck then I have been having with archery (honesty, my aim is probably worse than a blind elf’s. No kidding). I think I’ll just stick to watching Legi on screen. The first time I picked up a cheap wooden/plastic arrow for gym class, I got a sliver. I think that was a very powerful indication on my life as an archer! (my cousin, on the other hand, along with everyone else in my family has a superb elvish-aim . . .)
I thought it was a fascinating article, but I believe she’s wrong about when the arrows are real vs. CGI. Arrows would not be shot at actors EVER on set — it’s just too dangerous. They customarily fire at an off-screen target, but anytime both shooter and victim are on-screen at the same time, it’s got to be faked or the insurance bills would be sky-high. I think Weta just did really convincing CGI, even so far as to put realistic movement into the arrows in flight.
But there’s no doubt that Orlando did an amazing job of learning how to stand, fire, etc. — and look cool as an Elf while doing it!
Congrats! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article and the style in which it was written. I do concur, however, with an earlier comment – a l l arrows in the scene towards the end of FotR were CGI (as confirmed by the commentary of the post-production team on the DVD). OB may have been good, but no insurance would have covered that risk …
hehe I just noticed this. Evrey single story about Legolas seems to be the ones with the most comenta and the most people veiwing it! Very neat.

It looks like the person who wrote it has removed it from their site 🙁
Argh! The article is gone! Where did it go???
This was a great article. I guess it doesn’t hurt that Legolas and Archery make great topics.
