I’m one of those who argues for Serkis receiving an Oscar. Anyone who believes that he only added a voice is silly: this actor logged more hours than any other actor in the film!
Not only was he required to act in the suit inside of a studio — he was also out on the field with Elijah and Sean, acting out the part as a “real” actor would. When Gollum goes for the fish, that’s Andy in the water. When Sam pulls Gollum down by the rope around his neck and you see the rocks moving, that’s Andy’s foot moving them.
The films of today are much more advanced than those that were released when the Academy was formed. They have to face it: many of our films rely on digital enhancement and that includes digitally enhanced (and created) characters. Andy wasn’t just provide a voice — he was Gollum. It’s even said that many of Gollum’s expressions are Andy’s own.
The only thing that he did not do was design the CGI, but those designs would fall under the Best Special Effects category. Andy Serkis went above and beyond to create Gollum and I think that the Academy should be willing to get with the times and show him the respect he deserves, even if it’s only a nomination.
I would like to see him get an Oscar for his performance. I just read both articles, they both make good points, he did receive help with the character and all the facial expressions may or may not be his but the first article clinched it for me when it said ‘close your eyes’. With or without his digital body Andy Serkis did a wonderful job of conveying the tortured creature that Gollum is.
