BBC viewers were asked to vote for the greatest British figure of all time, resulting in a list of the Top 100 Great Britons.
Tolkien appeared in this list but was beaten, somewhat unbelievably, by the likes of David Beckham, Michael Crawford and, perhaps most controversially for committed fantasy readers, J K Rowling.
The Top 10 of Great Britons is still to be decided but the only literary figure remaining within that ten is Shakespeare. The other nominees are Brunel, Newton, Elizabeth I, Cromwell, Churchill, Nelson, John Lennon, Darwin and Diana.
